Brewers sign Gagne for 1 year, $10M - Tue, 11 Dec 2007 00:00:00 -0500
Former National League Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne, 31, and the Milwaukee Brewers finalized a one-year, $10 million contract yesterday.

Changes were inevitable. But few could have predicted the twists and turns that would materialize: Joe Torre was left hanging before being offered an incentive-laden contract that he rejected. His bench coach, Don Mattingly, his third base coach, Tony Peña, and his former catcher and bench coach Joe Girardi all vied for the job to succeed Torre. Girardi was hired and Mattingly followed Torre to Los Angeles where the two will try to improve the Dodgers' fortunes.

The drama surrounding personnel on the field was no less intense. After announcing during Game 4 of the World Series that he would opt out of his contract and become a free agent, Alex Rodriguez appeared to have played his last game in pinstripes. But after back channel talks between his people and the Yankees, he resumed negotiations, without his agent Scott Boras, and now is poised to earn another record pay day and remain in the Bronx. His teammates Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, also free agents, signed lucrative new deals which will likely see them finish their careers in New York.

Andy Pettitte, who had contemplated retirement, announced he would return to the Bronx for one more season. But the Yankees will continue to pursue another left-handed ace, the Twins' Johan Santana, the most sought-after trade target this off-season. Expect more changes in the Bronx aimed at getting the Yankees back on top of the American League East where they've ceded the top spot to the Boston Red Sox.
